Child's Play, Shallow Play

Risk-taking behaviours often reflect ambivalent ways of calling for the help of one’s close friends and family – those who count. It is an ultimate means of finding meaning and a system of values; and it is a sign of the adolescent’s active resistance and his attempts to find his place in the world again. It contrasts with the far more insidious risk of depression and the radical collapse of meaning. In spite of the suffering it engenders, risk-taking nevertheless has a positive side, fostering independence in adolescents and a search for reference points, it leads to a better self-image and is a means of developing one’s identity. It is nonetheless painful in terms of its possible repercussions: injuries, death or addiction. But let us not forget that the suffering is upstream, perpetuated by a complex relation between a society, a family structure and a life history. Paradoxically, for some young people who are suffering, the risk is rather that they will remain immured in their wor...

Couchsurfing, Craigslist & Hitch-hiking/existenial migration

COUCHSURFING The website is a forum where people all over the world (in countries Americans might never imagine have thousands of participants like the Middle East for example) have profiles on which they tell varying things about themselves; most fundamentally what kind of sleeping arrangements they can provide and to whom or how many and these same people do or may use other's profiles to send the message of where they are traveling and what kind of sleeping arrangements they are looking for and with what kind of person. In this way I am able to find at best free accommodations for sleeping and at the very least Strangers who will meet up for coffee or a beer simply to connect with a fellow traveler. For some the thing is just a kind of loose excuse for meeting new people and taking part in an ever shifting community. For now; couch surfing is a likely way to save money and meet new people who know the place you are visiting better than you do. It's also a way a person ...

Deep Play/Free Play/Flow/Immediatism

--> “Letting go of the familiar requires mental and emotional risk” 107. Walt Whitman. Let your soul stand cool and composed before a million universes.” I challenge this Dichotomy to war. Geertz says it's a way to get out things they can't get out elsewhere. It is high drama. It is narrative, exemplified by his narrative. The reason that Geertz easily combines with the other small pieces from people that provide the fragments of definitions that we have to explain what Deep Play is is because his content contains the same essential definitional ingredients. It's not in how he uses Deep Play but how he is engolfed by it in his very apprehension of it. Think less about his own understanding of Bali culture. Ignore what you do or don't know and focus on what it was in his experience that broke through and makes the specificities irrelevant, as least insofar as we lay the paradigm over different scenarios. What Geertz did was actually show the power of the paradigm to...

Chapter 1: Metageographic Alternatives

Before we talk about metageographic alternatives, we should talk about what metageography even is. What is part of the "natural" landscape is geography. The roads, buildings, etc, are the metageography. And the maps too. The way we use and understand our usage of space and place. To put liminality into perspective we must contextualize it within the larger metageography. +the exercise Kal would do with students, walking around the city in a different way. The ocean. The international date line. Time zones. The equator. The sky. In the village of East Dover there was a retired couple from Norway, John and Sandy. One night when we were talking at a party they regaled us with some of their traveling stories. The most unbelievable involved fake passports. For several decades John ran a company with a few other people. At some point they were looking at a map and, pointing at the black line-the border between two countries-someone asked, why don't we travel there! Someone ...

literature, narrative, story-life/song

SONG Called to be a guide and finally christened. To look and know. The tribe. The New Mythologies; the real history. A bridge appears out of thin air; my ancestry. The lost origin. Natives. The tragic past. But to know it is to be healed. I am ready to begin. Playing and Song are binary stars. Song is accessible to all senses. But deep play is a song whose meaning-making music tells the Story of our ancestors, the story of where we came from and who we were and what happened to the world and our fight to win back the world we worshipped, the meaning that used to be, not only not the result of doing, but also not simultaneously created in process. Rather meaning was there when we arrived. We didn’t have to make it. What we call meaning was our God. We worshipped the world precisely because it supplied not only everything we needed but the very reward that capitalism can never deliver: Meaning that can be saved and held and will secure us forever and feeds us and requires no work for i...

PREFACE to the Book

Graduate School and Life When I descended into my new South Park studio I began an entirely new journey, which was in fact more like a thousand journeys between heaven and hell during which I rarely if ever stopped en route to check out the beautiful and troubled world between. Both terrible and wonderful things happened down in that dingy studio, and of the wonderful there were many projects born, so much so that I am still working them toward completion as I tack amongst them, adding a little to this one, a little to that one, and sometimes bringing another brainchild into the family. In the studio, I began to transcribe these journals from the UBC trip onto my computer so that I could work them more easily into a blog. It didn't take long to discover that the blog was a much larger project than I anticipated. This is true in a number of ways. For one, the journals were sloppily written, many events were out of order or written about variously as in the moment, about moments t...

Epilogue: Walk a Mile in my Shoe

This has to be a documentation of a gallery exhibit featuring stories of shoes, starting with the shoes I had in my trunk for so long. Perhaps it can include the literature from the gallery but make it hybrid. When I left Halifax it was partly over an argument about inviting a stranger to the condo. As we saw this led to many more stranger interactions that I would have dreamed. As I watched the faces in the cars stream by time and time again I imagined that they were looking out their spaceships upon an alien. When people picked me up I felt as if they must have looked out of their spaceships and recognized someone from their planet. Rarely did we kill the stranger slowly. In fact we usually delved deep straightaway. I stayed over at someone's house who I didn't know and hung out with his family the next day. Isn't that something friends do? I had older women pick me up who were worried about me. Isn't that what mother's do? I had scott offe...
